National Hunt racing takes centre stage between November and April as all roads lead to the Cheltenham Festival in March, whilst the best of the action culminates at Aintree’s Grand National Festival in April. Last season, Paul Nicholls claimed his 12th Champion Trainer’s title, whilst Harry Skelton was crowned Champion Jockey for the first time.
Focus switches towards the Flat in May, as the season is centred around the five Classics, exclusively for the three-year-old colts and fillies. Newmarket hosts the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas in May, whilst Epsom plays host to the greatest Flat race in the world, The Derby and The Oaks,a month later.
The season’s final Classic, the St Leger, doesn’t discriminate. The Doncaster feature is open to both sexes. A horse completing the hat-trick is known as the Triple Crown, last achieved by Nijinsky in 1970. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot was the last horse to come close to emulating Nijinsky, valiantly going down by ¾ a length in the 2012 Leger, having already completed the 2000 Guineas – Derby double.
